  • 1) what is a luxembourg schengen visa?

A Luxembourg Schengen visa is a special kind of visa which allows you to travel among all the Schengen countries including Luxembourg for a maximum period of upto 90 days. This is a traveller’s dream where with one visa you can travel to any of the other 25 Schengen countries along with Luxembourg.

  • 2) the schengen visa is valid for which countries?

A Schengen Visa (issued by a consulate or embassy of a Schengen State) is valid for all 26 States of the Schengen Area (including the European territory of Luxembourg), unless it is marked otherwise on the visa sticker. So you do not need another visa to enter or stay in the European territory of Luxembourg. However, you must be in possession of documentary evidence for the reasons of your stay and your means of support. Schengen Area comprises of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

  • 3) how long can i stay in the schengen area on the basis of my visa?

The Schengen Visa is a short stay visa and takes the form of a sticker affixed to your passport. The definition of “short stay” is a stay of "90 days in any 180 days period". This means that the total duration of stay is of maximum 90 days in any period of 180 days. The precise length of validity of your Schengen Visa is indicated on the visa sticker under the heading “Duration of visit”. With a single-entry visa you can enter the Schengen area only once. This is indicated on the visa sticker under the heading "Number of entries" by "1". A two-entry or a multiple-entry visa allows for two or several entries during the validity of the Schengen Visa. This is indicated on the visa sticker by "02" or "MULT" under the heading "Number of entries".

  • 4) will all schengen visas be granted for 90 days?

No, not necessarily all Schengen Visas will be granted for 90 days. You may get the Schengen Visa only for the number of days that you present in your travel itinerary and your flight & hotel bookings

  • 5) can i apply again for a schengen visa if my application has been refused earlier?

You may appeal against this decision. The decision to refuse a Schengen visa and the reasons for the refusal are notified using a standard form that is handed out by the Member State's consulate that refused the visa. The notification of the refusal must include the reasons, on which the refusal were based, and the procedures and deadlines for submitting an appeal. You are free to re-apply again if your application has been refused earlier. However, it is recommended that you take note of the reasons for the earlier refusal before submitting a new application and make amendments, where necessary. The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. The visa fee covers the cost of the examination of the visa application.

  • 6) what is the schengen visa cover letter?

The Schengen Visa cover letter is a letter which summarizes your intent to travel to a country that is part of the Schengen area. In your cover letter you should explain: - the purpose of your trip - when and where you intend to travel - how your trip is going to be funded - day-by-day itinerary for your trip - duration of the trip

  • 7) is it possible to extend my schengen visa while in luxembourg?

You cannot extend your short-stay visa while in Luxembourg except in special circumstances, and exceeding your permitted period of stay is considered an act of illegality or criminality. Instead, you must return to your home country within the permitted period of stay and apply for another Luxembourg Visa if necessary.

  • 8) can i leave the schengen area and return again with my schengen visa?

Schengen visas may allow for a single-entry or multiple entries. With a single-entry visa you can enter the Schengen area only once. This is indicated on the visa sticker by "01". With a visa allowing for two or multiple entries you may enter twice or several times during the validity of the visa.

  • 9) how long before the start of the intended visit should i apply for a schengen visa?

You may only submit your Schengen visa application 90 days before your date of departure. We recommend that you apply at least 20 working days before the date you wish to depart as certain types of travel purpose may take longer than usual to process. For instance, the processing time of your Schengen Visa Application will take between 10-12 working days from your appointment date.

  • 10) how long does it take to obtain a luxembourg visa?

Typically, a Luxembourg Visa (Schengen Visa) takes anywhere from 5 to 15 days to process in the Luxembourg Embassy/Consulate. The processing time for a Luxembourg Visa is dependent on several factors and can change without notice at the consulate's discretion.

Editor's Pick The Old Quarter of Luxembourg City

There's no better place to begin exploring beautiful Luxembourg City than in its historic Old Quarter. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the city's ancient fortifications made it one of the most important of Europe's cities. The fortress was so impregnable, it was dubbed the "Gibraltar of the North," and although the original fortress was dismantled between 1867 and 1883, its impact upon the Old Quarter is evident everywhere.

Today, the old fortifications have given way to beautifully laid out parks and gardens, while its cobbled streets are lined with charming old homes and buildings. It's a great place to spend a few hours exploring as you cross its many bridges - including the spectacular Adolphe Bridge, considered a city landmark - and traverse its many alleyways, preferably without a map (just follow your nose and see where you end up!).

Grand Ducal Palace, Luxembourg City

A must-see landmark in Luxembourg City, the Grand-Ducal Palace is a gorgeous Renaissance building dating from 1572 that serves as the official residence of the country's reigning monarch, Grand Duke Henri. It was built as the city's original city hall in 1572 - a role it served until 1795 - switching eventually to its present use as the Grand-Ducal Place in 1890. While it's still the full-time home of the Duke, the public are permitted an opportunity for a peek inside during special organized tours made available from mid-July to the first week of September, when it becomes one of the city's most visited attractions.

Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM)

Fans of modern art (and ultra-modern architecture) must visit the superb Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM) with its collections from world-renowned artists. Since its opening in 2006, MUDAM has drawn consistent rave reviews for its contemporary collection, which includes works from such well-known artists as Bruce Nauman, Andy Warhol, and Julian Schnabel, to name but a few. In addition to its many fine permanent artworks on exhibit, the museum features many visiting and temporary displays, too. Also available to the public are a variety of first-rate educational programs and workshops, including some geared specifically to kids. Guided tours are also available in English.

Mondorf-les-Bains and the Moselle

The Moselle region of Luxembourg occupies much of the eastern part of the country and features slopes flanking the majestic Moselle River. The many picturesque villages tucked along the banks of the Moselle recall an ancient charm and are fun to explore and renowned for their varied cuisine produced from locally-grown products. It was also an area much favored by the Romans, and as a result many archaeological remains can be found dispersed throughout the region.

National Museum of History and Art, Luxembourg City

If you were to judge Luxembourg City on the quality of its museums - never mind its status as one of Europe's most historically important cities - it would still rank extremely high on the list of the continent's must-see cities. Topping the list is the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA). Located in the historic Fish Market area (the old town center), the MNHA's collections - art objects, archeological finds, furniture, tools, coins, arms, and documents dealing with the history of the country - are housed in a stunning new building.

Place Guillaume II, Luxembourg City

Luxembourg's Place Guillaume, one of the city's largest open spaces, is the former site of a Franciscan convent that has since been converted into a pedestrian zone. In the center is the equestrian statue of William II, King of Holland and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. It's also where you'll find the lovely Town Hall and the famous Trémont's lions, as well as the city's popular weekly market, famous for its flowers and plants, as well as local produce. Nearby is the 16th-century House of Raville with its beautiful façade, well-restored balcony, and spiral staircase.

The Bock Casements, Luxembourg City

Luxembourg's Bock cliff, with its fortifications and cannon-loopholes, is where you'll find the entrance to the famous Casemates (Casements du Bock), a 21-kilometer network of underground passages hewn from solid rock. Capable of sheltering thousands of defenders, as well as equipment, horses, workshops, kitchens, and slaughterhouses, the Casements - some of which date back to Spanish rule in 1644 - cover an impressive 40,000 square meters. Today, much of these remarkable fortifications can be explored on foot, while organized guided tours are available for those wanting to learn more about the tunnels' fascinating history.

The Walls of the Corniche, Luxembourg City

The spectacular Walls of the Corniche (le Chemin de la Corniche) in Luxembourg City have been called "the most beautiful balcony in Europe," towering as they do over the old city in the river valley below. It's here you'll find the big Gate of the Grund dating from 1632. Its ramparts reveal several aristocratic houses and refuges, as well as the ancient convent of the Dominicans and St. Michael's church (AD 987). In the suburb of Grund itself is a large cluster of buildings with the church and ancient Abbey of Neumünster, notable for its 17th-century cloister of Limoges, an organ dating from 1720, and a 14th-century "black virgin." The adjacent buildings are part of the ancient Hospice St.-Jean, founded by Emperor Henri VII, Count of Luxembourg, in 1309.

Walferdange and its Castle

Walferdange Castle, the Grand Ducal residence until the end of the 19th century, lies at the entrance to the Grunewald Wood on one of Luxembourg's principal tourist routes and is just a short distance from Luxembourg City (it's now a part of the University of Luxembourg). The village of Walferdange boasts picturesque scenery due to its location at the junction of the Alzette Valley with its lovely wooded heights. In addition to its great views, the village is well known for its roses, as well as a large archeological site that includes a Roman villa and an underground aqueduct. It has also become a popular shopping destination, too, since the opening of the Walfer Shopping Center.
