Land surveyors plan, direct and conduct legal surveys to establish the location of real property boundaries, contours and other natural or human-made features, and prepare and maintain cross-sectional drawings, official plans, records and documents pertaining to these surveys. They are employed by federal, provincial and municipal governments, private sector land surveying establishments, real estate development, natural resource, engineering and construction firms, or they may be self-employed.

Job Duties

1.       Preparing and maintaining sketches, maps, and reports of legal descriptions of surveys.
2.       Verifying data and calculations.
3.       Recording results of surveys.
4.       Calculating the measurements of sites.
5.       Writing descriptions of property boundaries.
6.       Researching legal documents, survey records, and land titles to clarify information about property boundaries.
7.       Perform duties related to land surveying for identifying land ownership and property boundaries.
8.       Conduct records management activities and perform historical and legal land ownership research.
9.       Develop and inspect land surveying project contracts.
10.    Support field measurement and layout.
11.    Conduct standard calculations to identify areas, elevation and volumes of field survey notes.
12.    Conduct basic calculations using field note data.
13.    Read, utilize and interpret design drawings and topographic maps.
14.    Study, learn and interpret CAD computer applications.
15.    Perform as Senior Project Leader for survey at in-house and mapping projects.
16.    Support Real Estate Product Line coordinator and in-house design group.
17.    Provide consistent and superior quality documents for survey, design and building projects for all clients in region.
18.    Perform as cadastral issue matter expert as team member.
19.    Perform as Contracting Officer Technical Representative (COTR) for Architect-Engineer.
20.    Involve in implementing mapping contracts and Indefinite Quality (IQ) surveying.
21.    Provide vertical and horizontal control maps and government cost estimate for mapping and survey projects.

Education Requirement

1.       A bachelor's degree in geomatics engineering or survey engineering or A college diploma in survey science or geomatics technology with additional academic credits and successful completion of equivalent examinations set by a regional board of examiners for land surveyors is required.
2.       A one- to three-year articling period is required.
3.       Successful completion of professional land surveyor examinations is required.
4.       A federal or provincial land surveyor's licence is required.
