Job Duties
1. Execute plans of electrical wiring for well-functioning lighting, intercom and other electrical systems
2. Install electrical apparatus, fixtures and equipment for alarm and other systems
3. Install safety and distribution components (e.g. switches, resistors, circuit-breaker panels etc.)
4. Connect wiring in electrical circuits and networks ensuring compatibility of components
5. Prepare and assemble conduits and connect wiring through them
6. Prevent breakdown of systems by routinely inspecting and replacing old wiring and insulated cables, cleaning circuits, etc.
7. Perform effective troubleshooting to identify hazards or malfunctions and repair or substitute damaged units
8. Install, maintain, and enhance electrical systems and components, including fuses, lights, and wiring
9. Inspect, test, and diagnose issues with electrical systems and components
10. Perform all work in a manner that meets and follows electrical codes, blueprints, and standards
11. Test electrical systems and components to ensure the proper functioning
12. Complete required documentation of repairs and service information
13. Ensure adequate inventory of necessary supplies and parts
14. Calibrate equipment to provided specifications
15. Perform preventative maintenance on electrical systems and components
16. Troubleshoot problems and make timely repairs
Education Requirement
1. Completion of secondary school is usually required.
2. Completion of a four- to five-year apprenticeship program is usually required.
3. Trade certification for construction electricians is compulsory in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and available, but voluntary, in British Columbia, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
4. Trade certification for electricians (domestic and rural) is compulsory in Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario.
5. Trade certification for electrical control (machine) builders is available, but voluntary, in Ontario.
6. Red Seal endorsement is also available to qualified construction electricians upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination.
