Job Duties
1. Operating the crane under supervision.
2. Inspecting the crane to ensure its safety.
3. Performing routine maintenance.
4. Carrying tools for running repairs.
5. Understanding and executing the job billing process.
6. Driving the crane to a worksite.
7. Wearing PPT safety equipment.
8. Cleaning and maintaining the crane hoisting mechanism.
9. Using lever and pedal controls efficiently.
10. Setting up the manufacturer’s operator manual.
11. Move levers, depress buttons and foot pedals to operate and control the speed/direction of crane movement
12. Conduct inspection of crane mechanism and lifting components to ensure parts are in working order
13. Liaise with helpers and ground workers who provide direction assistance through radio communication or hand signals
14. Inspect cables and grappling assembly to identify wear and facilitate replacement
15. Clean, lubricate, and maintain the moving parts of a crane such as the cables, pulley or grappling mechanism
16. Load or unload shipment of heavy duty machinery or material from trucks
17. Review work orders and schedules to determine sequence of operations
18. Inspect bundles or shipment to ensure conformance to company regulations or customer requirements
19. Signal and direct truck drivers to properly back vehicles into loading or unloading bay
20. Move, lift, and position equipment, machinery or heavy materials with the aid of hook, bucket or electromagnet
21. Provide report of work operations by completing relevant paperwork
22. Direct helpers to place blocks and outriggers to prevent capsizing when lifting heavy materials
23. Move levers and pedals to rotate crane on chassis or raise or lower crane boom/load line
24. Work within set standards of accuracy and precision.
Education Requirement
1. Completion of secondary school is usually required.
2. Completion of a one- to three-year apprenticeship program or industry courses in crane operating are usually required.
3. Mobile crane operator trade certification, for specified types of cranes, is compulsory in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia and available, but voluntary, in all other provinces and the Northwest Territories.
4. Tower crane operator trade certification is compulsory in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia and available, but voluntary, in Prince Edward Island.
5. Hoist operator trade certification, for specified types of cranes, is compulsory in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia and is available, but voluntary, in New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
6. Mobile crane operators may require a provincial licence to drive mobile cranes on public roads.
7. Internal company certification as a crane operator may be required by some employers.
8. Red Seal endorsement is also available to qualified mobile crane and tower crane operators upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination.
