Computer network technicians establish, operate, maintain and co-ordinate the use of local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs), mainframe networks, hardware, software and related computer equipment. They set up and maintain Internet and intranet Web sites and Web-server hardware and software, and monitor and optimize network connectivity and performance. They are employed in information technology units throughout the private and public sectors. Supervisors of computer network technicians are included in this unit group.

Job Duties

1.       Installing network hardware components and cables.
2.       Configuring network software.
3.       Identifying and eliminating bottlenecks to ensure long-term network efficiency.
4.       Troubleshooting and resolving issues with the network.
5.       Ensuring the network operates securely.
6.       Providing technical support to co-workers.
7.       Collaborating with other members of the IT team and management.
8.       Performing necessary upgrades to the network infrastructure as needed.
9.       Maintain, troubleshoot and administer the use of local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), mainframe networks, computer workstations, connections to the Internet and peripheral equipment
10.    Evaluate and install computer hardware, networking software, operating system software and software applications
11.    Operate master consoles to monitor the performance of computer systems and networks and to co-ordinate access and use of computer networks
12.    Provide problem-solving services to network users
13.    Install, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade Web-server hardware and software
14.    Implement network traffic and security monitoring software, and optimize server performance
15.    Perform routine network start up and close down and maintain control records
16.    Perform data backups and disaster recovery operations
17.    Conduct tests and perform security and quality controls
18.    Control and monitor e-mail use, Web navigation, and installed software
19.    Perform shell scripting or other basic scripting tasks
20.    May supervise other workers in this group.

Education Requirement

1.       Completion of a college or other program in computer science, network administration, Web technology or a related field is usually required.
2.       Certification or training provided by software vendors may be required by some employers.
3.       Registration with a regulatory body is required in Saskatchewan.
