Computer engineers (except software engineers and designers) research, plan, design, develop, modify, evaluate and integrate computer and telecommunications hardware and related equipment, and information and communication system networks including mainframe systems, local and wide area networks, fibre-optic networks, wireless communication networks, intranets, the Internet and other data communications systems. They are employed by computer and telecommunication hardware manufacturers, by engineering, manufacturing and telecommunications firms, in information technology consulting firms, by governmental, educational and research institutions and in information technology units throughout the private and public sectors.

Job Duties
1. Design, develop and build computer hardware and software systems
2. Perform routine checks to ensure hardware and systems are stable and operating efficiently
3. Identify and resolve software problems as they arise
4. Determine opportunities to improve efficiency and stability in data processing and workflow
5. Work with other teams to ensure software and hardware systems are designed to support organizational goals
6. Develop protocols for checking for and repairing software bugs
7. Navigate workload ticketing system and resolve tickets in order of urgency
8. Stay up to date on industry trends and technologies in order to ensure the organization is taking advantage of the most current technology
9. Performing validation testing for motherboard hardware.
10. Conducting hardware testing using state of the art technology and testing tools like Logic Analyzer, Oscilloscope, and Function Generator.
11. Reporting hardware quality assurance issues.
12. Creating blueprints and designing new computer hardware based on blueprints.
13. Updating existing computer equipment and integrating new technology into old equipment.
14. Overseeing various manufacturing processes for computer hardware.
15. Performing regular maintenance activities and troubleshooting computer hardware problems.
Education Requirement
1. Computer engineers require a bachelor's degree in computer engineering, electrical or electronics engineering, engineering physics or computer science.
2. A master's or doctoral degree in a related engineering discipline may be required.
3. Licensing by a provincial or territorial association of professional engineers is required to approve engineering drawings and reports and to practise as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
4. Engineers are eligible for registration following graduation from an accredited educational program, three or four years of supervised work experience in engineering and passing a professional practice examination.
