Job Duties
1. Control project from start to finish to ensure the high quality, innovative and functional design
2. Take the “brief” to identify clients’ needs and put together feasibility reports and design proposals
3. Develop ideas keeping in mind the client’s needs, building’s usage and environmental impact
4. Produce detailed blueprints and make any necessary corrections
5. Compile project specifications
6. Keep within budgets and timelines
7. Ensure that all works are carried out to specific standards, building codes, guidelines and regulations
8. Make on site visits to check on project status and report on the project
9. Cooperate and liaise with construction professionals
10. Follow architectural trends and advancements
11. Lead and develop projects from early concept through design development
12. Prepare drawings, specifications, and construction documents
13. Design and document commercial and industrial building projects
14. Consult with clients to determine their requirements
15. Coordinate preliminary architectural studies for major new structures and alterations to existing structures and site development
16. Organize and manage permit documents
17. Work with teams across business lines, in remote locations, and coordinate with subcontractors
18. Resolve complex design issues with innovative and practical solutions
19. Modify existing plans and elevations to fit client and sales needs
Education Requirement
1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited school of architecture or completion of the syllabus of studies from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is required.
2. A master's degree in architecture may be required.
3. Completion of a three-year internship under the supervision of a registered architect is required.
4. Completion of the architect registration examination is required.
5. Registration with a provincial regulatory body is required in all provinces and the Northwest Territories.
6. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification is offered by the Canada Green Building Council and may be required by some employers.
