The primary duty of a dairy farmer is to manage dairy cows so that they produce maximum quantities of milk. Most farms have a staff to be supervised ranging from a few employees to several dozens, so personnel management skills are also beneficial to a dairy farm manager.

1. Feed cows, administer medication, and clean waste
2. Operate milking equipment to milk cows
3. Ensure that all farming and milking equipment is properly maintained
4. Work in conjunction with large animal vets to provide herd health management, veterinary treatments, and routine vaccinations
5. Consult with animal nutritionists and livestock feed sales representative to create feeding plans that yield maximum milk production levels
6. Monitor dairy cows for signs of potential disease to ensure that all livestock remain in optimum health and produce high-quality milk.
7. Milk dairy cattle while ensuring livestock remain calm and comfortable so cattle continue to produce maximum quantities of milk.
8. Weigh cows and check for any physical signs of disease or injury and provide preventative medical care as needed.
9. Review the pens, buildings and other areas to ensure the areas remain hygienic to reduce the risk of injury and disease to the cattle and farm workers.
10. Provide food and water to cattle and ensure that supplies remain well stocked so that the livestock never go hungry.
11. Administer medications, vaccinations and other medical care and coordinate with veterinarians as needed.
12. Use tools to move feed, animals and other equipment to the appropriate areas on the farm in an efficient manner.
13. Maintain trucks, tractors, milking equipment and other gear to ensure they remain in working order and reduce any repair costs.
14. Cleans and sterilizes milk containers and equipment, and tends pumps that automatically clean milk pipelines.
15. May build and maintain fences and farm facilities
